Oxford University String Ensemble

The Oxford String Ensemble is the newest ensemble to come within the OUMS fold. It is a small ensemble comprising about 35 of the best string players in the university, a varied mix drawn from each of OUO, Philharmonia and Sinfonietta.

The ensemble was established in Michaelmas 2005, and gave its highly successful debut concert in the final concert of the Christ Church Arts Festival in Hilary 2006, in a programme that included a joint performance of Vaughan-Williams' Oxford Elegy with the Christ Church Bach Choir.

Currently conducted by Marc Gascoigne and Matt Bain, its recent concerts have included performances of Holst's St Paul's Suite, Dvorak's Serenade for Strings, Britten's Simple Symphony and Grieg's Holberg Suite. The ensemble holds annual auditions for a new conductor each Michaelmas, and for a new manager each Hilary.

The orchestra gives one concert per term in venues such as the O'Reilly Theatre, Jacqueline Du Pre Music Room and the University Church.
