OUMS Ensembles

OUMS is responsible for overseeing the activities of a number of university ensembles. These all perform to a very high standard, and usually give termly concerts in venues such as the Sheldonian Theatre and the University Church.

The University boasts two symphony orchestras: the Oxford University Orchestra, which is professionally conducted and often works with prominent national and international soloists, and the OU Philharmonia, which is always student conducted.

The OU Sinfonietta is a much smaller group specializing in the performance of repertoire from the early classical period in combination with contemporary chamber music. Once players have played in OUO or OU Phil, they may be asked to play in the Oxford Chamber Orchestra, which performs regularly in Oxford and further afield.

The OU Wind Orchestra performs a variety of music from the wind band repertoire, and many woodwind, brass and percussion players appreciate the opportunity to perform the exhilarating pieces written for this genre.

OUMS has supported the creation of a top level Big Band. In addition there is an OU Brass Band and String Ensemble which were added in 2005/6.

Please use the menu to access further information about each orchestra, including contact details and links to their homepages. There is also a page on auditioning for the orchestras. For details of forthcoming performances, see the box on the right or the events calendar.
