Important Information about the OUMS Facilities Card
There appears to be some confusion as to precisely how the OUMS Facilities card system operates, particularly as regards the use of practice facilities at the Faculty of Music. These notes are an attempt to clarify the situation: please take the time to read them extremely carefully.
Terms of Use
OUMS members are granted special permission to use the practice rooms at the Music Faculty at the following times: between 6pm and 10.00pm on weekday evenings and between 9am and 10.00pm on both Saturdays and Sundays. There are currently six practice rooms, all with upright pianos. Some rooms may also have music stands, although instrumentalists are advised to bring their own. There are no percussion instruments available for general use.
Please remember that, although OUMS members are allowed access to these rooms, the facilities are provided primarily for the benefit of music students. OUMS members are thus expected to forfeit the use of a room if any Music Faculty student wishes to practice. Such a scenario is particularly likely to arise during Trinity Term of each year.
Please note that smoking is not permitted in any part of the Music Faculty building and food and drink is not permitted in the practice block. Anyone found either smoking or with consumables in the practice block will be asked to leave and their card will be deactivated.
As a part of the Music Faculty's revision of its security system all OUMS users will be registered for one academic year. Swipe cards will deactivate at the end of each academic year and OUMS members are asked to re-register each October.
Steps to using these rooms
- Purchasing an OUMS Facilities Card.
Please note that this card is obtained from the University Music Society and NOT from the Faculty of Music directly. The card entitles you to a range of benefits, of which use of the Music Faculty practice rooms is only one. - Activating your Bodleian/University card
To do this you must visit the Administrative Assistant (currently Ms Mary Clarke) in the General Office at the Faculty of Music. This office is open between 9.00am and 12.30pm and between 1.30pm and 5pm.
When you arrive at the faculty you will have to press the intercom buzzer by the front door in order to be allowed in. Once inside, go through the glass double doors on the left of the foyer, down the corridor and up the stairs. The office is on the left hand side at the top of the first flight of stairs.
Please ensure that you have both your OUMS Facilities Card and your Bodleian/University Card with you on this occasion. The Administrative Assistant will activate the second of these to allow you to use it as a swipe card for access to the Music Faculty buildings during the times outlined above.
Using the Practice Block
To get to the practice block, enter the faculty building (using your Bodleian/University card as a swipe card) and go through the glass double doors in front and to the left of you. Follow the corridor round, turning right in front of the library, taking the next left, and exiting through a wooden door. You will then be outside but should be able to see the practice block immediately in front of you. This building is also accessed using your Bodleian/University card as a swipe.
Before leaving the main faculty building please make especially sure that you have your Bodleian/University swipe card with you - you cannot get back into the main faculty building without it and cannot, therefore, leave the premises! Please also make sure that you are out of the practice rooms by 10.00pm: cards will cease functioning at 10.15pm, at which point your card will not let you back into the main building.
Contact details
Finally, if you have any problems or questions about OUMS Facilities Cards or the use of the practice rooms at the Music Faculty please contact the OUMS President and not the Music Faculty staff.
Should you encounter any problems with the condition of the practice block and/or the instruments, however, please report them immediately to the Faculty Office by leaving a message on the Administrative Assistant's extension (tel:01865 276135).
