Hertford College Music Society represents the strong musical tradition associated with Hertford. It consists of many thriving musical groups, from the large orchestra to small chamber groups, which exist for anyone who would like to be involved in music.

As we aim to include everyone who would like to take part, most of our groups are non-auditioning. Although there are significant numbers of singers and players who regularly join us from outside college, HCMS is run by the musicians of Hertford primarily for the musicians of Hertford. Whatever your standard or particular interest, there is likely to be a group to cater for you. If not, we welcome the possibility of new ones! All students who want to participate in college music can have a say in what we do and the repertoire we perform - even the chance to conduct.

Chapel Choir

Hertford College Chapel Choir is a large, ambitious choir with many members from both inside and outside the college. The choir sings College Evensong each week in addition to concerts, Cathedral visits, and occasional services throughout the term. College Orchestra

Hertford College Orchestra is a large group, welcoming players of all standards. Consequently, it is known to be one of the most successful college orchestras. We rehearse Monday evenings, 7-9.30pm for a termly concert (usually in 6th week). Recent repertoire has included: Scriabin's Piano Concerto, Sibelius's Finlandia, Brahms' Symphony No. 1, and Schubert's Unfinished Symphony, interspersed with lighter works such as Grieg's Peer Gynt Suite No. 1. Our aim is to perform music that people enjoy and we therefore invite all members to give concert suggestions. We also provide the chance to conduct; the conductor is always a student, appointed by the HCMS committee and everyone is welcome to submit themselves for consideration.

College music is far more accessible than university-based groups; the smaller scale helps to cater for diverse musical interests, whatever your standard. There are opportunities for everyone, however much or however little time you have to spare. HCMS organises a social event (usually a themed dinner) once a term, which brings together members from all our musical groups.
