Details:
The St John's College Music Society is extremely active in all things musical and aims to uphold the illustrious tradition of the musical arts in college.
Nevertheless St John's is known as one of the more inclusive of the college music societies and welcomes members of all colleges to join with and enhance the already excellent musical standards of the college.
The Music Society puts on catered termly orchestral concerts, as well as smaller chamber concerts by alumni and invited musicians. The Music Society is also currently seeking to revitalise and extend the college's arts week, an exiting prospect which will enhance still further the musical standing of St John's.
For more information about the Music Society and events please contact the SJCMS President, Isla Mundell-Perkins, at: isla.mundell-perkins@sjc.ox.ac.uk.
Aside from the Music Society itself the college runs a joint orchestra with St. Anne's forming SASJO, one of the larger and blossoming college orchestras.
Recently performed works include Schubert's Symphony No. 8, Haydn's Symphony No. 103, Beethoven's Symphony No. 1 and excerpts from Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition, as well as shorter orchestral pieces such as Brahms's Academic Festival Overture, Mendelssohn's Hebrides Overture and Mozart's overture to The Marriage of Figaro. All concerts are performed in the excellent venue of the St John's auditorium.
The orchestra is always keen to welcome new members of any standard and is generally recognised as having a friendly and relaxed atmosphere whilst still creating polished performances. The refreshments at rehearsals have also been deemed by members past and present to be of the highest standard!
