OUMS: Oxford University Music Society

Welcome to OUMS

Formed in 1867, the Oxford University Music Society is one of the oldest societies in the University. OUMS runs several ensembles: Oxford University Orchestra, Oxford University Philharmonia, Oxford University Sinfonietta, Oxford University Wind Orchestra, Oxford Chamber Orchestra, Oxford String Ensemble, Oxford University Big Band and Oxford University Brass Band.

The Oxford University Music Society was founded to promote the appreciation and performance of music within the University. For the last 140 years we have been a central focus for Oxford's rich musical life. Members, whether listeners or performers, enjoy a wide range of facilities and benefits, and many performing groups are greatly assisted through our co-ordination work and financial support.

OUSC: Bach's Christmas Oratorio, Parts 1 to 3

Details:
Oxford University Student Chorus presents Bach's Christmas Oratorio, parts 1 to 3

Tickets: £5/£3 (contact chorus@oums.org)
Approx. running time: 75 minutes

Soloists:
Paola Cuffolo (Soprano)
Ed Edgcumbe (Countertenor)
Nick Pritchard (Tenor)
George Coltart (Bass)

Conductor: Theo Lester

Bach's Christmas Oratorio is widely regarded as one of his crowning achievements. Originally written in 6 parts for 6 of the major feast days of Christmas, a performance of the whole work can often last nearly 3 hours. The first 3 parts describe the birth of Jesus, and the annunciation and adoration of the shepherds. The composer uses an intricate orchestration to illustrate these well-known stories of the festive period, as told by the Evangelist (Nick Pritchard), soloists and the Chorus, performing in the newly-renovated St Peter's College Chapel.

-----------------------------------------

The Oxford University Student Chorus is the University's largest non-auditioning choir. Numbering over 80 singers, the chorus is committed to bringing together both experienced and first-time singers from all parts of the University and with any (or no) musical background, through the performance of larger scale choral works. The chorus is regularly joined by Oxford's finest vocal soloists and orchestral musicians for their termly concerts, and is currently conducted by Theo Lester, a second year music student and Organ Scholar at St Peter's.

Recent concerts have included: Orff's Carmina Burana, Handel's Coronation Anthems, Mozart's Requiem, Beethoven's mass in C major, Faure's Requiem and Rossini's Petite Messe Solennelle. The Chorus performs at venues across the city, including the University Church and various College Chapels.

As Oxford's premier non-auditioning choir anyone is welcome to join - enthusiasm and committment to the weekly rehearsals (Mondays, 7:30pm-9:30pm) is of course essential! OUSC appoints a new conductor annually at the end of Trinity term.
